New Works, Eleven Images 2017

Meanwhile, here’s what I have been up to since the first of the year:

Started a new piece. For whatever reason, I wanted to orient this canvas diagonally to make a 10″ by 10″ diamond shape. Like so:

I began by sketching an idea in graphite, and decide on a mix media piece, using graphite, marker, and acrylic paint.

Worked for a little while on this one, it is getting much much closer to where I want it to be, but I will likely need another time or two at my canvas before I am ready to hang this one and let it dry.

A little more minimalist that what I generally do, but so far I like how this one has started, quite a lot.

To finish out this piece, my feeling was a couple of touches were needed, to balance the image with a cool-ish color, but very subtle so as not to change the over-all tonal palette of the image. I think I got what I was looking for with this piece.

New works in progress. It’s been a while since I have done anything very large. A lot of my recent work been with 12″ x 12″ canvases, and 8″ x 12″. I decided I need to scale up, and I put three 16″ x 20″ canvas together for a total dimension of 20″ x 48″. Did the color blocking, and I have begun to move into building up the paint.

New work, first sitting. A couple artist friends have suggested a very high-gloss varnish for this piece. As a result, I am probably going to clean up this image only slightly, –leaving the image mostly unchanged– and experiment with some varnishes. Stay tuned as I develop that process, I’ll be updating as this one is finished:

An artist friend recommended I finish this work with a very high gloss finish. Finishing the work took a bit of experimenting –but I think I have gotten most of what I wanted. This is a piece that really needs to be seen in person.

New Small Works, (Small Works Progress Administration) 2017

We’re already a couple weeks into the new year, I haven’t updated, but I have been busy.

I have started a new set of the Small Works Progress Administration (small paintings in acrylic and mixed media). That in the parenthesis there is something of a change in of itself: I discovered I really enjoy working in mixed media by doing a project for a friend. Previous series of small works had been in acrylic paint only, but this set includes acrylic paint, graphite, and marker, on gessoed cardboard. This new series will sell for $25 each. (dimensions are approximately 5″ x 9″, though these are hand-made items and their sizes vary)

I have always been fascinated with skeleton keys. As an adult I have a small collection of them I buy in antique shops. Here are three studies of a couple keys I own, one is decorative, the other was bought at an antique shop.

En Plein Air (open air) Painting

While I am not primarily a water-colorist, (to me that was always my mother’s medium and she still owns the title family water-colorist) –I have begun to develop a lot of work in that medium. However, since the weather has been lovely as it has been, I have decided to do a series of watercolor paintings painted around Albany En plein air. Early in my teaching, I made an effore to develop proficiency in the medium. As I had to teach other people to use watercolor, I quickly taught myself and have greater comfort with it.`As the summer progresses I will probably do a lengthy series of watercolor.

Currently, I am intending to incorporate Eleven Images as a 501c (non-profit) in the very near term, and I also need a passport to begin traveling overseas. So, sales of this series will likely be used towards those purposes. I can ship these, and I accept paypal. though they would probably be most meaningful to someone with ties to the area.

Today, I was in Washington Park, on the west side of the lake there. The images are looking east over the lake. (all images watercolor on paper, 11″ x 14″)

I could sell these as a series (3, make offer), or $30 each.

Eleven Images: Featured Pieces of the Week

I decided to make a new feature for the art blog. Each week I will spot-light a different work that is for sale and not currently on exhibit. This summer and fall is shaping up to be pretty busy with exhibition. Again I have work being shown with the Art on Eight. I inundated with a glut of work in my two-bedroom apartment. This week’s featured piece is one I did for a themed show that was, sadly, not accepted for the show. The work is acrylic on two wood panels re-purposed from an abandoned table-top I commandeered. The image is based on a nineteenth-century headstone I photographed in Amherst, Massachusetts. The sale will include a print of that photo.

This counts as the first time I’ve gotten to see Angelspit live. The set ranged through tracks spanning Angelspit’s discography, quite a few tracks off the latest release “The Product.” The set also included a track by Hardcore Pong, the side project of Karl (Zoog Von Rock/Angelspit) and Brian (The Gothsicles) with Brian joining Zoog and Matt (who did double duty with his hand-held midi-controller) onstage. Needless to say, the set did not disappoint.

Perhaps the best part of the night (for me personally) was the ten or so minutes I spent picking Karl’s brain about the stage clothes he custom-made for the tour. Super cool guy, and just massively creative, it was really cool to finally meet him after all the years following Angelspit’s career.

Near to the end of Angelspit’s set, my main camera’s battery went dead, and I shot the rest of the set with another camera. I will be including those photos, plus some crowd and behind the scenes nonsense, when I have a chance to update.

Another New Work (Time Spent With Lesser Evils)

So, I started a new abstract piece, I just realized now, I had started it November of last year.

For a while I had considered it done, and gave it a place on my wall in the kitchen.

It started life, almost a year ago, looking like this:

Eventually, a portion of the canvas looked like this:

Then it sat on my wall for many months. Very lately (as in last night) I decided I needed to re-work it. Although I considered it done, there were places the while of canvas peeked through the paint. It was too reliant on a yellow ochre and red scheme that my paints trend towards without my total consent. Parts of it had gotten too blended with umber and red. I wanted to work it again so I did.

Here’s the re-finished, finished painting as of last night, drying:

I am still unsure whether or not to call this one done. Am I done beating up on this canvas? I don’t know yet. I am going to give it a couple days.

I also did not name or date this piece. I am trying to come up with a fitting name. Normally I reference something going on in my life in titles. So, I’m thinking about that bit of it…

PS: just for fun. An old iMac sits several feet away from my easel, and became collateral damage in the process of painting last night:

Update: as of 12/27, while I was scrambling to have things to exhibit, I decided on a title of this piece. A frind had suggested time ought to be a theme. The challenge with titling abstract works, is you want to be creative without being over-the-top. You also want it to logically register to whoever is viewing a piece. It’s hard to choose a title that makes sense with the content of an abstract piece. A friend suggested “time” as a theme. I ended up calling it “Time Spent With Lesser Evils”

“Years Later, I Stopped Looking for Places to Hide From Her”: Session 1

I started a new work today. The image comes from this sketch, which is a pencil drawing I did from a photo by photographer Clifford Richards of the Steven and Harriette Meyers House. The Meyer’s Residence was once a stop on the underground Railroad, and a local organization is currently fundraising to renovate the house and make it a historical site and cultural center. It is located on Livingston Ave in Albany:

Now, I have always believed that as an artist, one needs to find a way to connect to the emotional content of the work you are creating. Since pre Civil war as an era of history is a little beyond the scope of my experience, I used a prompt to get me thinking about the piece. The title refers to a period in my early twenties when I had to withdraw from school to tend to my health. At the same time, a pretty serious relationship had ended, and my former fiancee had made some pretty wild accusations about my behavior. As a result of that I developed a strangely specific anxiety about meeting my former partner in public places. I began mistaking almost any petite girl with dark hair that bore a passing resemblance for my former partner. Agoraphobia, if you call it that, or any related phobia of that sort is pretty balls. Panic attacks suck.

The prompt may be about a pretty dismal time in my life, but it’s hopeful, because it suggests that that fear passed with time.

Anyway, before the picture of my first session with the piece: I needed to let the first coat of paint dry before I continued to build the colors. I made the pitch of the stairs less steep, and opened up the fore-ground (see original sketch). I hope to continue to work on this piece throughout the week. If I make some progress, I’ll share it here:
